This past Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 2013, over 140 motor vehicles were involved in a tragic pileup auto accident that resulted in the wrongful death of a young couple and injuries to nearly eighty more individuals.
The multi-car accident occurred in the early hours of Thanksgiving morning as commuters were traveling to join their families. The conditions were extremely foggy, which may have played a role in the massive collision. The car accident began with a single auto crash in the eastbound side of the highway. That crash triggered a chain reaction, causing multiple collisions on both sides of the highway.
Local law enforcement authorities report that the fog was so thick that deputies did not immediately recognize they were dealing with multiple collisions. According to the County Sheriff’s Office, two people were killed in the wreckage after being crushed by a tractor-trailer.
Over 80 people were transported to local hospitals, at least a dozen in critical condition. Anywhere from 140 to 150 cars were involved in the pileup. It took over eight hours to clear out the wreckage and reopen the highway. An investigation of the car accident is underway.
