Icy road conditions caused a car accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl in Wakefield, Massachusetts on January 11, 2014.
Julia Vanella, of Malden, MA, was in the front passenger seat of her family’s car when the fatal accident occurred. She was pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to Julia, four other people also suffered personal injuries in the collision, all of whom required transport to the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester for treatment of their injuries. Julia’s mother, Lisa, and 6-year-old sister, who was seated in the back seat, were among the other injured in the car crash. They each sustained non-life threatening injuries.
According to reports, heavy rain was at least partially to blame for Julia’s mother, who was driving the family car at the time of the crash, to lose control of the vehicle as it was traveling north on Route 16. The Vanella’s vehicle then entered the southbound lane, where they were hit by a Jeep Liberty traveling in the opposite direction on the highway. A passenger in the Jeep sustained a critical head injury and was taken to the same hospital, but was later released. It is unclear whether the driver of the Jeep was injured in the crash.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident. Police stated that there were at least 15 other car accidents near Wakefield due to the poor weather conditions that day.
