The community of Mahopac High School in Mahopac, New York is grieving this weekend, after a 19 year-old graduate of the New York high school died in a motor vehicle accident that took place on Friday night when his car smashed into the school building.
David Diachenko, 19, who graduated from Mahopac High School last spring, crashed his BMW into the school’s façade late on the night of Friday, February 21, 2014. Diachenko likely died on impact and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene of the car accident.
Accident reconstruction experts from Mahopac and state police are performing an analysis of the scene of the auto crash in an attempt to determine the speed of Diachenko’s car at the time of the accident. Witnesses reported that Diachenko did not attempt to brake and the police appear to confirm this fact after commenting that there are no skid marks around the accident site. The police further commented that Diachenko’s vehicle likely came down nearby Gleneida Boulevard hill, which is reportedly very steep.
Construction workers spent most of the weekend repairing the high school’s façade. The building has been inspected for structural damage and appears to be in sound condition.
Toxicology tests are pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a part in the fatal car accident. The police are continuing to investigate. Mahopac High School is expected to reopen as scheduled on Monday.
